PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Be sure you have installed all the Windows Updates for your machine.

Go to Start, Programs, Windows Update and make sure you have the most recent software installed.

If you a running WinXP, you should have Service Pack 2 installed, you can check this by going to Control Panel, System, and it should say what service pack you have installed with your system configuration.
